Writing Application Essays and Statements of
Purpose for Graduate School
1.5 hours

Intended Audience

Designed to help students applying to master’s or doctoral programs in the sciences, social sciences, arts, or humanities.

Overview

If you’re applying to masters and doctoral programs in the sciences, social sciences, arts, or humanities, you'll find this class useful. We’ll consider general principles for writing convincing and persuasive essays and statements — ones that review your undergraduate work in your major and that emphasize your research interests within the specific field you plan to study in graduate school. We’ll read and discuss samples of successful essays and statements of purpose from such fields as history, biochemistry, political science, and environmental toxicology.

Please note that this class is not appropriate for personal statements for law, medical, or other professional school applications. For those, you’ll want “Writing Personal Statements for Law, Medical, and Professional School Applications.”
