Dan Bier

Daniel J. Bier, author of this issue’s guest article, is a long time friend of the Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program, having been a member of our Advisory Council since its inception. He is familiar to many readers of WiSSPers as the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care, a position he has held since 1979.

With two Master’s degrees from the UW—Madison, one in Public Policy and Administration and one in Social Work, Dan began his professional life as a social worker at Central Wisconsin Center, a residential care facility for individuals with severe and profound developmental disabilities. His commitment to work with the disabled population continued when he moved to the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services as a Budget and Program Consultant, a move which coincided with the State mandate to move individuals out of state institutions and into the community.

In recognition both of his distinguished professional achievements and his many volunteer activities, Dan has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the 1983 Callon-Leonard Award for outstanding work on behalf of mothers and infants, the 1984 MCH award from the March of Dimes for contributions in the area of birth defects prevention, and the 1993 Distinguished Service to Public Health award from the Wisconsin Public Health Association.

Dan and his wife are both Wisconsin natives (he from Janesville, she from Appleton) and are long time residents of Madison. They have a 10 year old daughter, Kaitlyn. Dan enjoys relaxing with his extensive collection of 20th century recorded popular music, and in fact is the happy owner of three vintage juke boxes (from 1935, 1939 and 1948), one of which is presently on loan to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum of the State Historical Society.

Why Dan chose to submit his photo from Dyersville, Iowa, remains enigmatic...
