Program is funded by Maternal and Child Health grant
monies as part of the larger Statewide Genetics Services
Network (SGSN). We are fortunate to have Amy
Favour at the state level to serve as our
contract administrator. Amy, a Board certified Genetic Counselor, received her undergraduate degree in genetics from UW-Madison in 1987. It was at Madison that Amy was first introduced to genetic counseling as a profession, in an undergraduate genetics course. Two years after leaving the UW, she was awarded her M.S. in Genetic Counseling from the University of California-Berkeley. After obtaining her Masters degree, Amy held genetic counseling positions in pediatrics at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, followed by a five year tenure (1990-1995) in the prenatal/pediatric clinics at Valley Childrens Hospital in Fresno, California. In this position much of her work was with couples grieving the loss of a baby, work she found personally and professionally satisfying. The opportunity to work with families in crisis was one reason Amy chose genetic counseling as her career. Fortunately for us, Amy and her husband returned to their home state of Wisconsin, in 1995. In her current position Amy has many responsibilities in addition to serving as contract administrator to WiSSP and other SGSN projects. One of Amys major responsibilities is as the state Newborn Screening Coordinator. This aspect of her position involves planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the follow up component of the Wisconsin Newborn Screening Program. Amy also conducts training for health care providers and develops educational materials pertaining to disorders that are screened for by the Newborn Screening Program. (Note: Amy is available for educational programs about newborn screening and genetics to local hospitals and others; she can be reached at 608-266-8904.) Amy and her husband, Scott, a City of Madison police officer, are both Wisconsin natives. They returned to the state to be closer to their families. They have two children, Molly, age 4, and new baby Sam, age 3 months. Camping is a family activity, with the beautiful Wisconsin state parks as a favorite destination (although trips this summer will be delayed until Sam is a little older!) In her rare spare moments, Amy appreciates the opportunity to take a long walk, or to escape into a book. |
