Personal Portraits

Cynthia Curry, M.D., is the director of Medical Genetics and Prenatal Detection at Valley Children’s Hospital in Fresno, California. After receiving her medical degree from Yale University, Dr. Curry completed pediatric residencies at the University of Washington Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle, Washington, and the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These were followed by a genetics and dysmorphology fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Curry’s commitment to helping families experiencing fetal demise is deeply felt. In 1988 she was awarded a grant to study pregnancy loss, the first UCSF Foundation research grant. Though organizationally different, the Central Valley Pregnancy Loss Program and the Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program are fundamentally similar. Both are committed to thorough investigation after intrauterine death to ensure appropriate counseling of families. Dr. Curry’s picture with Alex, whose mother had experienced four pregnancy losses prior to his birth, attests to her dedication. It will be a pleasure to work with her on the guidelines for care following intrauterine death for the American College of Medical Genetics.

Dr. Curry is married to Dr. Bjorn Nilson, who is in charge of Valley Children’s Hospital and Valley Medical Center residency program through UCSF-Fresno. Drs. Curry and Nilson are very busy with their family, having children both in college and high school as well as out on their own. Dr. Curry is an avid flower and vegetable gardener, and also enjoys traveling when she can.
