A Sandhill Memoir
Hazel St. Germain Grange

"Grange's narrative is filled with unrelentingly hard labor, tragic reversals, and, ultimately, vindication. . . . Wallace Grange, a contemporary and friend of the naturalist Aldo Leopold, authored several landmark studies arising from his work with wildlife and ecosystems. Grange, however, concentrates not on her husband's science but on their struggles and victories, played out against the backdrop of a time when modern technology had made few inroads and the science of ecology was as yet poorly understood."–Kirkus Reviews

"In 1932, Wallace Grange left a secure government job in Washington, D.C., to set up St. Germain commercial game farm in rural Wisconsin. [Grange's] account of the period 1932–1946 is an engrossing story of the pursuit of a dream and a penetrating glimpse of rural life during the Depression. . . . Wallace was a pioneer in game management, a friend of Adolph and Olas Murie, Aldo Leopold, and Sigurd Olsen."–Publishers Weekly

Hazel St. Germain Grange was bom in Wisconsin and orphaned at a young age. She won honors in high school, but college was out of the question.
