Kicking and Screaming
Dragging Ireland into the 21st Century
Ivana Bacik

An acerbic look at the Irish legal system and an examination of campaigns to change the law and liberalize Irish society

After a century of wars, internal division, political upheaval, mass emigration, and high unemployment, a more prosperous, diverse, and tolerant Irish society has emerged. Ivana Bacik examines the shape and nature of the new Ireland, where Catholic religious traditions sit uneasily alongside a culture that is growing more secular and liberal in outlook.

Ivana Bacik is Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Penology at Trinity College, Dublin, and the former editor of the Irish Criminal Law Journal. She is also a lawyer, a feminist campaigner, and a political activist well-known for her work on human rights and civil liberties.
