Máire Cruise O'Brien
History of Ireland and the Irish Diaspora
"Like all good books, it becomes an instant friend and one is impatient to return to its pages."The Irish Times
In this invaluable autobiography, Irish writer and diplomat Máire Cruise O'Brien explores the republican and revolutionary connections of her family as she was growing up, the fallout of the Irish Civil War, and life in the Irish-speaking districts of Ireland almost a century ago.
Cruise O'Brien spent two years studying in Paris after World War II, where she mixed in literary circles with Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, American bookseller and literary patron Sylvia Beach, and others. She became the first Irish woman to serve as a diplomat, a role that took her to Spain in the time of Franco, the United Nations General Assembly, and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. After her marriage to Conor Cruise O'Brien, she accompanied him to many countries, including wartime Congo, where Conor was U.N. representative; Ghana, where he was vice chancellor of the new university under Kwame Nkrumah; and the United States, when he held the Schweitzer chair at New York University.
This is the autobiography of a unique woman, filled with famous people, revolutionaries, writers, statesmen, and many others, offering a compelling insight into a time of great upheaval in Ireland, Europe, and Africa.Máire Cruise O'Brien, an established Irish language author, has published many highly acclaimed volumes of verse, articles, short stories, and translations.
