The Age of Rock
Edited by Timothy E. Scheurer
Scheuer traces the roots of rockfrom its arrival in the 1950s through its evolution and coming of age in the 1960s and its fragmentation and growing pluralism in the 1970s and 1980s. He examines the contributions of such musicians as Woody Guthrie, Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen and discusses the meaning of trends like protest, disco, punk, and reggae. The essays explore the role of various media in the growth of rock music and examine the reasons that made rock music a driving force in post-World War II culture.
