wit, and character. Heavy streaks of morality diminished as the
entertainment element increased. Heroes performed in a wide range
of adventures, but restrictions often kept heroines close to
home. Series fiction peaked, then waned, but such writers as
Beverly Cleary and Madeleine L'Engle carried on the style.
