University Health Services (UHS) is the health clinic on campus, open to any current UW-Madison student. A team of experi-enced professionals combine routine health care with specialty clinics that focus on key health concerns. Students can choose to see the same general-medicine clinician throughout their years at UW-Madison. The UHS team provides services such as:
Most costs are already paid by tuition and fees; coverage is also available for spouses and domestic partners of students. The SHIP Health Plan is an option for those needing comprehensive insurance. The pharmacy has special reduced student prices on hundreds of prescription medications. UHS wants students to stay well, and works with student organizations to keep the campus safe and to promote diversity and achievement.
Medical and Prevention Services, and the SHIP Health Plan are located at 1552 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53726. Counseling Services and Prevention Services are located at 115 North Orchard Street, Madison, WI 53715. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and Wednesday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For additional information, see www.uhs.wisc.edu or call 608/265-5600.
Satellite clinics provide convenient health care in several places across campus.
Although the health care services offered by UHS address the majority of students' needs, UHS does not cover the cost of treatment received outside its facilities. Students are strongly encouraged to have health insurance with coverage for emergency room care and hospitalization.
SHIP, the official university health care plan, provides major medical care beyond the UHS services paid by student fees. International students and J-1 Scholars are required by the university to enroll in the SHIP Health Plan or to file a waiver proving they are adequately insured. Coverage for spouses, partners, and dependents is also available. For more information about SHIP, see www.uhs.wisc.edu.
Beyond the medical and mental health support given to students, creating a positive social environment is an important component of care for university students. The UHS Campus and Community Partnerships Team promotes violence prevention, civic engagement, community service, and community building. They work closely with dozens of campus and city groups to create a caring place for students to learn, thrive, and contribute.
