Student Financial Services

The Office of Student Financial Services assists students whose personal and family resources are not adequate to cover the expenses involved in attending UW-Madison. Financial aid available through the office consists of loans, grants, and work-study employment. Funds for these programs come from the state of Wisconsin, the federal government, and the university. The office also provides counseling to students to help them manage money effectively, and offers information on other potential sources of financial assistance, such as scholarships and campus employment. The office provides small short-term loans for emergency situations.

To apply for financial aid students should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available from www.fafsa.ed.gov. The office will contact students if copies of their parents' federal income tax returns are required. Additional information may be requested. Students may apply beginning in January for the following summer and academic year. Students are encouraged to apply as early in the year as possible.

Although work-study positions are available only to students who have been offered federal work-study funds as part of their financial aid package, several hundred non-work-study jobs are advertised through the UW Student Job Center, lower level at 432 North Murray Street. Both on- and off-campus employers list openings with the job center. View available jobs at the job center or online at jobcenter.wisc.edu.

Additional information about financial aid and employment is available at www.finaid.wisc.edu, in various Student Financial Services publications and in the Timetable. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
