Prepharmacy Course Requirements

Contact the UW-Madison pre-School of Pharmacy advisor or the School of Pharmacy Admissions Office with questions about any of the following requirements.

Biology (with labs) (8-10 cr)
A complete one-year integrated sequence of general biology, to include a good foundation in both organismal biology and cell/molecular/genetics biology. If a year sequence of general biology is not available, then: animal biology + one course in cell biology or genetics or botany, to total 8-10 cr. A one-semester general biology survey course, and anatomy, physiology, and microbiology, do not count toward this requirement.
Chemistry (with labs)
A complete one-year sequence of general chemistry (8-10 cr) + a complete one-year sequence of organic chemistry (8-10 cr).
Calculus (see important information under School of Pharmacy Calculus Admission Requirement)
Physics (with labs) (8-10 cr)
A complete one-year sequence of general physics. Students who plan to pursue graduate study in the physical sciences should consider taking calculus-based physics.
Communication
Course work sufficient to fulfill the UW-Madison Communication "A" requirement.
Economics (3-4 cr)
Microeconomics. General economics and macroeconomics do not fulfill this requirement.
Social Science (3 cr)
General sociology or general anthropology or cultural anthropology. Cultural anthropology counts also as ethnic studies.
Behavioral Science (3 cr)
General psychology or social psychology.
Ethnic Studies (3 cr)
Students who fulfill this requirement at UW-Madison or at schools outside the UW System must do so by selecting a course, or a course equivalent to one, approved by UW-Madison; students who fulfill this requirement at other UW System schools may do so by selecting a course designated by the campus of attendance as fulfilling its ethnic studies/diversity requirement. An ethnic studies course, in addition to fulfilling the ethnic studies requirement, may fulfill or count toward any one of certain other admission or graduation requirements, if it qualifies as such.

Non-Professional Curriculum Graduation Requirements

History (2 cr)
Any kind of history. A history course may count also as ethnic studies, if it qualifies as such.
Humanities electives (3 cr)
A humanities course may count also as ethnic studies, if it qualifies as such.

* A total of 206 credits is required for graduation. These credits consist of all prepharmacy course requirements, all professional curriculum course requirements (including 18 professional elective credits), all non-professional curriculum graduation course requirements, and any free-choice electives needed to reach the total of 206 credits.

** Some students will be assigned to clerkship sites outside the Madison area; some students will not receive their first choice of clerkship region ("hub"). Some students may need to complete a fourth Phm Prac 760 clerkship for professional elective credits, or may wish to complete such a clerkship for further professional development.

*** A total of 35 credits of clerkships is required for graduation. However, due to the academic calendar and associated credit values of clerkships, students actually will complete more than 35 credits. Clerkship credits in excess of 35 will count as professional elective credits.
