The School of Nursing, established in 1924, first offered a three-year certificate program and then a five-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hygiene. Today, it offers a four-year academic curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.) degree. The bachelor of science program prepares individuals for entry-level professional practice and provides a basis for leadership roles and graduate study. In addition to the baccalaureate program, the school offers a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing under the aegis of the Graduate School.

The purpose of the master of science degree program is to prepare nurses for leadership roles in advanced clinical practice and education and/or to provide a basis for further research preparation. Nurse practitioner options are available in acute care, adult, geriatric, pediatric, psychiatric, and women's health nursing. The master's curriculum is reflective of faculty expertise and scholarship as well as the standards and guidelines of the profession. It is designed to maintain a high standard of scholarship and prepare individuals with in depth knowledge and experience in their selected areas of practice. Program graduates are eligible for national certification and reimbursable professional practice.

The School of Nursing offers a program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree with a major in nursing. The program is characterized by an early and intensive emphasis on research. For further information, contact the Graduate Programs Office, 263-5180 or see www.son.wisc.edu.

The mission of the school is to improve human health through nursing leadership in research, education, and professional and public service.

Accreditation

The baccalaureate and master's programs in nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The baccalaureate program also is approved by the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing. Graduates preparing for nursing practice are eligible to take the licensing examination given by the State Board.
