College of Letters and Science

Medical Science as an Undergraduate Major

Medical science is a major in Letters and Science which is completed after early admission to medical school. Successful completion of first-year medical school requirements satisfies the medical science major requirements. This major is intended for exceptional students who gain early admission to a medical school and start medical school studies at the beginning of their senior year. In other words, the undergraduate senior year and first year of medical school are combined. Students must first set up an individual appointment to speak with the designated advisor for this program to determine eligibility to pursue this program.

In addition to all pre-medical requirements (see section on Pre-Medicine), students who wish to earn a major in medical science must:

  1. successfully complete at least 90 undergraduate degree credits;
  2. earn at least 30 of these 90 credits in residence at UW-Madison with an L&S classification in the semesters just before admission to medical school;
  3. satisfy all L&S general degree requirements with the exception of a major; and
  4. successfully complete the first year at any accredited medical school with advancement to second-year medical study. Students will need to provide an official transcript from medical school showing all the classes and grades earned.
