The department offers a wide range of courses in literature, linguistics, religion, history, and cultures of Central and Southwest, South, and Southeast Asia. The languages currently offered during the academic year include: Arabic, Filipino, Hindi, Hmong, Indonesian, Pali, Persian, Sanskrit, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu, Uzbek, and Vietnamese. In addition, the languages currently offered during the summer session include: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, and Urdu; Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese. 5. At least 15 credits should be in LCA content courses.
All students are required to fulfill the L&S requirement of at least 15 credits of upper-level work in the major completed in residence. LCA courses 300-699 (with the exception of first- and second-semester language courses) count toward this requirement.
Students interested in earning Honors in the Major should consult with the department undergraduate advisor. Students should ordinarily declare to the department their intention to graduate with Honors in the Major at the end of the sophomore year or the start of the junior year, and must receive permission from the undergraduate advisor and complete an Honors in the Major Declaration Form before being admitted to the department honors track. To graduate with Honors in the Major, students must have a 3.5 GPA in courses in the major and complete a Senior Honors Thesis. In addition, a student must have an overall GPA of at least 3.3 in all courses taken at UW-Madison.
This award may be granted at graduation upon the recommendation of the department to the dean to any student not earning the honors degree. Distinction may be awarded to students earning a 3.5 GPA in Languages and Cultures of Asia and who have done superior work. Students interested in earning Distinction in the Major should contact the undergraduate advisor.
