Transfer from Another Institution

Students who are transferring from another college or university may contact the Student Academic Affairs Office within the School of Human Ecology, where staff members can help plan educational programs, advise about transfer procedures, and discuss degree requirements.

The steps in applying for admission as a transfer student include: completing a UW-Madison application and submitting it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions; submitting both the official high school transcripts and official transcripts of all college work attempted; and including a list of any current courses. Because of enrollment limitations placed on UW-Madison, some qualified students may not be admitted.

Following admission to UW-Madison, students must apply for admission to specific School of Human Ecology undergraduate degree programs. Details and deadlines about these competitive processes are available through the Student Academic Affairs Office, Room 135, School of Human Ecology Building, 1300 Linden Drive. Group advising sessions are scheduled each semester to address the application process.

For more information on specific admission requirements for transfer students, contact the UW-Madison Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 716 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53706; 608/262-3961; onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu; www.admissions.wisc.edu.

On-Campus Transfer

Students will be considered for transfer to the School of Human Ecology from another UW-Madison college or school if they are in good standing with the college or school in which they are enrolled and meet the grade point average requirements of the intended major. Transfer admissions are governed by department enrollment-management policies. On-campus transfer admissions are made annually or once a semester, depending on department policy. Students should contact the Student Academic Affairs Office for information on group advising sessions and admissions procedures for the intended major.

A student who has been dropped by another college or school must be readmitted to that college or school before being considered for transfer into the School of Human Ecology. Even though another college or school may readmit a student with the idea of a later transfer to the School of Human Ecology, the school is not obligated to accept the student on transfer.

Transfer actions should be initiated in advance of the semester in which enrollment is planned.

Reentering Students

Students previously enrolled at the university but not enrolled as students during the preceding semester or summer sessions must file a reentry application form with the UW-Madison Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Students on strict academic probation at the time of previous enrollment or in dropped status must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Dean of Student Academic Affairs in the School of Human Ecology in order to be considered for readmission. Conferences should be scheduled at least six weeks before registration.

Special Students

There are two categories of Special students at UW-Madison: (1) the College special, who is allied with a college/school and must obtain an "Academic Action" from the Student Academic Affairs Office to enroll each semester; and (2) the University special, who is a nondegree student not allied with a particular college or school and is admitted through the Office of University Special and Guest Students—Division of Continuing Studies. For more information related to University Special students, contact Division of Continuing Studies, 1305 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706; 608/263-6960; info@dcs.wisc.edu; www.dcs.wisc.edu/services/.

A School of Human Ecology Special student is one who enrolls as a nondegree candidate to take one or more courses, usually for the purpose of making up certain specified courses or grade point deficiencies, while working toward teacher certification, or taking a short terminal program leading to the transfer of credits to another college or university. A student desiring to enroll as a College Special student must meet all the requirements for admission to the university either as a freshman or with advanced standing, and must have the prerequisites for the courses in which enrollment is requested.

Those seeking admission as a School of Human Ecology Special student must submit an application (available in room 135, 1300 Linden Drive) and official transcripts of previous studies to the Student Academic Affairs Office, Room 135, 1300 Linden Drive.

A College Special student may be admitted by the Assistant Dean of the School of Human Ecology upon the written recommendation of the chair of the departmental area in which the student wishes to study. Information regarding further steps and procedures for admission and registration is available from the Student Academic Affairs Office.
