Liberal Studies Requirements (36 credits) for students first enrolled
as new freshmen summer 1996 through spring 2007
(Requirements for Other Professional Programs)
Humanities, 8 credits
Complete a minimum of 8 credits. Met by the following:
- Courses coded H, L, Z, X in the Timetable
- Elementary and intermediate level foreign language courses
- English department courses coded L and intermediate or advanced level
creative writing and composition courses. English 100-118 and other
elementary level composition courses are excluded.
- Com Arts 105 and 181
- Theatre 141, 150, 160, 161, 170
- All Dance and Art department courses.
Students in Art, Art-B.F.A., Dance, Dance-B.F.A., and IATECH will be restricted in their use of dance and art course work to meet liberal studies requirements; see Education Academic Services. Art and Art-B.F.A. students may not use courses counting toward their aesthetics requirement to meet this requirement.
Social Studies, 8 credits
Complete a minimum of 8 credits. Met by the following:
- Courses coded S, Z, W, Y in the Timetable Journalism 203, 204,
205
- Kinesiology students must complete Psych 201, 202, or 281 and can apply
it toward the 8 credits.
Science, 8 credits
Complete a minimum of 8 credits to include one laboratory science course. Met by the following:
- Courses coded B, P, N, W, X, Y in the Timetable
- All Mathematics department courses, excluding Math 120-132
- All Computer Science department courses
- All Statistics department courses.
Note: PE Activ 100 cannot count toward this requirement, as it is a School Education course.
Lab science. Most lab sciences are identified as such in the Timetable. In addition, the following courses include some lab experience and will meet the lab requirements for students in the School of Education: Agronomy 100, Astronomy 100, Atm Ocn 101, Botany 100, Botany/Plant Path 123, Food Science 235-236, Geology 100, Horticulture 120, Mechanical Engineering 160 and 210, Physics 109. An AP Biology score of 4 or 5 will also fulfill the lab science requirement.
Notes for specific programs:
- IATECH students must take Physics 109.
- Dance and Dance-B.F.A. students must complete Anatomy 329.
- Rehabilitation Psychology students must complete two biological science
courses or earn an AP Biology score of 4 or 5.
- Kinesiology students will meet this requirement by completing the
required science courses, e.g., Chem 103/104 and Physics 103/104.
Liberal Studies Electives
Additional course work to bring the total to 36 credits. May include the General Education requirements and extra credits from above categories. Kinesiology students will complete the elective course work with their required science course work.
