Advisor: Patricia Atwood, 5560 Humanities Building, 263-1918
Degree granted: Bachelor of Music (College of Letters and Science) ; teacher certification through the School of Education
Students wishing to prepare for a teaching career in music will concentrate in (1) general music at the Early Childhood through Adolescence level, (2) instrumental music (band/orchestra) at the Early Childhood through Adolescence level, and/or (3) the combination of choral and general music at the Early Childhood through Adolescence level.
Entering students must first audition and be accepted by the School of Music as preliminary music majors (see the School of Music information in the College of Letters and Science portion of this catalog). Depending on the type of teaching certification desired and the student's primary performance area one or more additional performance area(s) may be required . Prospective music education majors must audition for and be accepted into any additional performance area(s) at the music major level (200 level) of performance study prior to beginning the methods and practicum sequence. The School of Music cannot guarantee admission to additional performance areas, nor can it guarantee that appropriate substitute course work will be available. The School of Music expects students admitted to its programs to complete all subsequent performance study at UW—Madison.
The number of students admitted to the music education program is contingent upon available space, and enrollment limits may be necessary to ensure students have reasonable and timely access to required School of Music courses. During the second year in the core music curriculum, each student must sign up for an audition/interview with the music education faculty. The audition includes, but is not limited to, performance, sight-singing, and keyboard harmonization components.
Minimum admission eligibility academic requirements: To be considered for admission into the teacher certification program, students must have 54 total transferable college-level credits, a cumulative GPA of 2.75, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 across all Music and Music Perf department courses, and a 2.5 GPA in the two-year core sequence of music theory and music history courses.
Students who successfully pass the audition/interview process must then file a teacher certification program application with Education Academic Services (available on the EAS Web site, www.education.wisc.edu/eas) and a major declaration form with the School of Music. Applicants must also have passing scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test. Each student accepted into the music education certification program will enroll jointly with the School of Music (College of Letters and Science) and the School of Education. Consultation with the music advisor at the outset of these programs and each semester thereafter is strongly recommended.
Program continuation requirements. In addition to meeting all course-related standards, students must receive a grade of B or higher in all music education practicum courses and a grade of C or higher in all applicable music education methods courses (Curric 332, 333, 334, 335, and 336) in order to continue in the program.
Graduation requirements: 2.75 cumulative GPA and a 2.75 GPA in all professional education courses, excluding the clinical program. Each area of concentration has specific requirements to include 130-136 degree credits. Degree candidates must also complete senior and major residency requirements and any other degree requirements of the College of Letters and Science. Certification also requires passing a content examination in the subject area(s) in which certification is sought.
Admission criteria and program requirements may be modified from one admission period to the next. The most current program information is available in Education Academic Services, B117 Education Building, 608/262-1651; www.education.wisc.edu/eas.
The liberal studies requirements combine academic strengths and interests with an opportunity to explore a wide selection of courses offered across campus. Students will complete course work in humanities, social studies, and science. Effective summer 2007, three additional requirements—ethnic studies, global perspectives, and U.S. or European history—will be required of all students in the School of Education. See Teacher Certification Liberal Studies Requirements for specific course work.
Effective summer 1996, new freshmen must complete a group of campuswide course requirements known as the General Education requirements. This initiative is designed to provide all UW-Madison students with a comprehensive, well-rounded program of studies. See General Education Requirements.
This program already requires at least one course, Curric 305, that is also approved to meet the General Education Communication B requirement. The course can be used to meet both requirements.
For the professional music course requirements, 58-68 credits, see the School of Music information in the College of Letters and Science section of this catalog.
All individuals seeking an initial Wisconsin State teacher's license after August 31, 2004, are required to take and pass an approved content examination in the subject area(s) of interest. These tests, the Praxis II: Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests, are offered through the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Teacher education students at UW-Madison must take and pass the exam for their program area(s) and submit scores to EAS before entering their final, full-time student teaching semester. See Content Examinations for more information.
Certification also requires each student to develop and maintain a teaching portfolio. For more information, see Portfolio.
