UW Colleges to UW–Madison Transfer Planning Guide

This guide is subject to change and will be reviewed annually. It is not a substitute for advising. Students considering transferring from UW Colleges to UW–Madison are urged to begin planning for the transfer early and to seek guidance from a UW Colleges advisor and the UW–Madison advisor indicated below.

1. Application Procedure

The application period runs from October 1 to February 1 and the deadline for applying to the professional Nursing major for the Fall semester is February 1. Students not enrolled on the UW–Madison campus must submit an application form and all high school and college records to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Armory and Gymnasium, 716 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53706-1481, or use the online application: http://www.apply.wisconsin.edu. Students applying directly to the nursing major must also submit a separate program application and college transcripts to the School of Nursing Undergraduate Admissions Office, K6/146, Clinical Science Center, 600 Highland Ave., Madison, WI 53792-2455. The application is available after October 1 online at http://www.son.wisc.edu.

Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing. Nursing receives approximately 400 applications a year for 154 spaces. Consequently, it is likely that the GPA required to be competitive for admission may be well above the minimum 2.75 GPA.

2. Non-course requirements

To be considered for admission to the Nursing major in the Fall semester, the following non-course requirements must be met by the end of Spring semester.

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on all prerequisites. Four of the seven prerequisites must be completed by the end of fall semester. All prerequisites must be completed by the end of spring semester.
A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on all previous undergraduate college work. Space in the program is limited so it is likely that the GPA required to be competitive for admission may be well above the minimum GPA.

3. Required courses

A minimum of 54 credits is required for admission into the Nursing major. Those credits must include courses in Introductory Psychology, Introductory Sociology, Human Growth and Development, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Microbiology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology as detailed below:

4. Required courses not available at UW Colleges

None.

5. Recommended electives available at UW Colleges

The required courses listed above add up to about 25 credits of the required 54 credits. Students should plan their curriculum to transfer an additional 29 credits. Recommendations for general education courses are below. Students should plan to take 12-13 credits of the remaining 29 at the intermediate or advanced level.

6. General education requirements.

Information on General Education requirements at UW–Madison is available through the Undergraduate Catalog web site and at the General Education Web Site.

Transfer students should plan their courses to transfer courses that will satisfy the UW–Madison general education requirements, especially Communications Part A (Comm A), Quantitative Reasoning Part A (QR-A), Quantitative Reasoning B (QR-B), and Ethnic Studies. Consult TIS, the appropriate section of the UW–Madison Undergraduate Catalog, and an advisor for details. Many transfer students will complete the Communications Part B (Comm B) requirement and some other general education requirements after transferring.

Specific advice:

Any 6 credits of Humanities courses are accepted. Courses in literature, art history, and philosophy are typical examples. Seven additional credits of either Humanities or Social Studies, as student chooses, are also required. Suggested choices include courses in interpersonal communication. Nursing will accept for transfer foreign language courses that are taken as Humanities credits. Retroactive foreign language credits will count as electives.

Communication Part A: A placement test score (EPT greater than 660 and RCT greater than 730), or ECS greater than 705) that exempts a student from UW Colleges English 102 Composition II will also satisfy the UW–Madison Comm A requirement.

Communications Part B: Comm B is satisfied by Nursing 319, taken after admission to the Nursing major.

Quantitative Reasoning Part A: UW Colleges MATH 110 (which transfers as UW–Madison Math 112 Algebra). A student who tests out of UW Colleges Math 110 has satisfied the UW–Madison QR-A requirement.

Quantitative Reasoning Part B:
UW Colleges calculus courses Math 211, 221, 222, 223 transfer to UW–Madison as calculus courses, which satisfy the QR-B requirement.Other options that satisfy the QR-B requirement include ECON 204 (transfers as UW–Madison ECON 101 Principles of Microeconomics), PHILOS 211 (transfers as UW–Madison PHILOS 211 Elementary Logic), or MATH 117 (transfers as UW–Madison STAT 301 Intro-Statistical Methods).

Students who plan to eventually enter graduate programs in Nursing at UW–Madison may choose to postpone the QR-B requirement until their senior year, when they can take a statistics course. Many graduate programs require statistics to be taken within a specific timeframe to enter the graduate program.

7. Special notes.

Students with 24 or more transferable semester credits who are not prepared for direct transfer into the Nursing major may apply to transfer to UW–Madison as pre-nursing students and complete the Nursing requirements at UW–Madison. The application deadline for Fall or Summer semester is February 1; for the Spring semester it is October 1. Admission to the University and the pre-nursing classification does not guarantee admission to the professional Nursing major.
