NC-1019 Control of Emerging and Re-emerging Poultry Respiratory Diseases in the United States Hatch Multi-State Research |
|
What is NC 1019?
NC 1019 is a multi-state research project dedicated to the study of respiratory diseases of birds with emphasis on poultry. Respiratory illnesses are among the most common and important diseases of chickens and turkeys and cost farmers and producers millions of dollars annually. Scientists throughout the USA coordinate their research on avian respiratory diseases in the areas of mechanisms (pathogenesis), surveillance, diagnosis and ultimately, control. Funding for the research comes from federal (USDA) and state sources.
Objectives
1.
Identify reservoirs of infectious respiratory disease agents in wild birds and
poultry.
2.
Develop improved diagnostic capabilities including real time PCR as well as
other rapid on-farm tests for economically important respiratory diseases.
3.
Investigate the pathogenesis and polymicrobial interactions of specific
infectious agents associated with poultry respiratory diseases.
4.
Develop new prevention and control strategies for poultry respiratory diseases.
