Summer Undergraduate Research
Programs
and McNair Scholars

The Molecular
and Cellular Pharmacology (MCP) has joined the Integrated Biological
Sciences Summer Research Program at UW-Madison.
The program information and application are on-line at:
http://www.wisc.edu/cbe/srp-bio/
MCP is not listed as a separate option on the Integrated Biological
Sciences program web site, but it is an option for summer research.
List the Cellular and Molecular Biology Program as your top choice on
the application and specifically identify the MCP program as your area
of interest in the essay.
Dr. Janet Branchaw is the Director of the IBS-SRP Program.
The Molecular
and Cellular Pharmacology Program gives minority and disadvantage undergraduate
students the opportunity to explore careers in the molecular and cellular
pharmacological field. Students will engage in research focused on signal
transduction, dissection of signaling pathways in Drosophila,
to the mechanisms of transcriptional control, as well as the mechanisms
of action in various drugs. Students will receive guidance from faculty,
graduate students, and other scientists in laboratory techniques used
to carry out a well-defined research project. Students will learn essential
research skills, problem-solving skills, and work one-on-one with a
faculty/staff mentor on a chosen research topic. Students will prepare
a brief research proposal, a written report and an oral presentation
on their chosen topic. There are 39 faculty actively involved in Molecular
and Cellular Pharmacology research activities.
Eligibility:
1. U.S. citizenship
or permanent residence is required.
2. Preference given to African American, Hispanic, Native American, Southeast
Asian, Native Alaskan or Native Pacific Islander or students who are McNair
Scholars.
3. Or low-income and first-generation of college
4. Or Students of any ethnic background from small liberal arts institutions
without broad research facilities
Preference is
given to students between their junior and senior years (expecting to
graduate in 2008 or 2009) who have a grade point average of at least 3.0.
Financial Support:
Travel, housing, food allowance, health insurance, PLUS a minimum stipend are provided.
McNair Scholars
and other undergraduate students expecting to graduate in 2007 or 2008
are especially encouraged to apply to any of our programs. We encourage
you to check out our web site at info.gradsch.wisc.edu/mp/index.html
