GLBT Alumni Council Student Scholarships

LGBT students often struggle with financial challenges, like many other students. Frequently, LGBT students do not have the support of their families. Coupled with tuition and living cost increases, a UW-Madison education can be out of reach, especially for historically underrepresented groups. Need-based scholarships help insure the access and retention of qualified LGBT students. Scholarship assistance will allow them to devote their time, energy and talent to the quest for knowledge and the joy of discovery.

Gifts designated to scholarship support open the door to promising students and are a vote of confidence for LGBT students who could not otherwise afford the UW-Madison. They recognize that they can set high goals and dream big dreams thanks to the generosity of others.

Thanks to generous donations by UW-Madison alumni and friends, the Wisconsin Alumni Association's affiliate group, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Council (GLBTAC) annually awards scholarships to current and incoming UW-Madison students.

Recipients have demonstrated a commitment to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, and they have maintained outstanding academic achievement. Each recipient has also demonstrated financial need.

What has been missing are long-term, endowed scholarships to provide ongoing support to talented students. But thanks to collaborative efforts between the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the University of Wisconsin Foundation, the opportunity now exists for you to change a life by establishing an endowed scholarship for a worthy student.

Making a Difference

"Receiving a scholarship from the GLBT Alumni Council came at a pivotal time; it allowed me to graduate in a timely manner when I was struggling to fund my own education. Furthermore, the recognition for my service to the community provided invaluable feedback and inspired me to continue the important work of working for equality, I am very grateful."
-Max V. Camp

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Council first began giving out scholarships in 1998, and to date has awarded $76,500 to more than 50 worthy GLBT and Ally students at the University of Wisconsin. Donations have increased steadily, and for the most recent academic year, 2007-08, the GLBTAC awarded $9500 to 7 students.
