Preventive Law Activities

General Advice Memoranda/Documents

ALS has created general advice memoranda and informational documents on several topics of broad institutional interest. These include the following: public records, open meetings, photocopying guidelines for teaching and research, advertising and commercial use, facilities use, discrimination against students, liability protection for health professionals, and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (Buckley Amendment).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

ALS is interested in creating an electronic bulletin board to communicate more broadly its responses to FAQs.

Preventive Law Programming

ALS has developed preventive law presentations on a variety of legal issues affecting the university. The topics include the following: open meetings and public records, Faculty Policies and Procedures (FPP) issues, constitutional law issues, personal and institutional liability, contracts, intellectual property, scientific misconduct, and conflicts of interest and the Wisconsin Code of Ethics. They can be repeated individually or in a series for departments or other units. Most are designed to last about forty-five minutes to an hour, although it may be possible to either lengthen or shorten a particular presentation. ALS would also be interested in knowing of any other topics on which programs could be developed.
