The Institute has no annual theme; fellowships are awarded across the spectrum of subjects and disciplines in the humanities on the basis of the significance of the proposed research and the promise of the applicant.

Research support is offered in various forms. In a competitive process that begins with departmental nominations, the Institute makes five-year appointments of Senior Members from the UW-Madison campus. Senior Members receive a half-time reduction in their normal teaching loads. In two other competitions open to applications from individuals, the Institute offers six one-semester fellowships to members of the UW-Madison faculty with release time from all teaching obligations. Applications are due on October 15. The Institute also offers four one-year fellowships to humanities faculty from other campuses of the University of Wisconsin System with release time from teaching. Applications are due on March 1.

Through a generous bequest from Friedrich and Lieselotte Solmsen, the Institute offers three one-year Solmsen Postdoctoral Fellowships to scholars from other universities working on literary and historical studies of the European Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance periods up to about the year 1700, awarded through an annual competition. Applicants must be in possession of the doctorate at the time of application. Applications are due on October 15. The award this year is $40,000 for the academic year.

A generous gift from Arthur and Janet Holzheimer funds a two-month fellowship in the History of Cartography, awarded through an annual competition. See http://www.geography.wisc.edu/histcart/

We offer several dissertation fellowships to UW-Madison graduate students. The Dana-Allan Dissertation Fellowship is open in all fields in the humanities. Former members of the Humanities Institute have also made bequests to the Humanities Institute. The William Coleman Fellowship in the History of Science, the Robert Reinhold Fellowship in Classics, and the Madeleine Doran Fellowship in English. Competition for these fellowships begins with departmental nominations. The Fellows will be in residence at the Institute to carry out dissertation research and writing, will participate in the Institute activities, and will present his or her research at one of our weekly luncheon meetings.

Finally, the Institute also provides a limited number of honorary (non-stipendiary) fellowships to scholars who have other sources of support. Honorary fellows receive access to the university libraries, the Institute's support services, and (depending on availability) office space at the Institute. Honorary fellows also participate in the Institute seminars and other activities.
