The preliminary examination is centered on a specific research proposal prepared by the student and presented to the thesis research committee and must be completed by the beginning of the spring semester in the student's third year in the program. Degree candidates must also pass an oral defense of the dissertation by the thesis research committee.

During the first year of study, the student must meet with the thesis research committee and submit a short research proposal. In the second year, candidates are required to participate in the department teaching program for two semesters. After achieving dissertator status, the student is required to present a seminar a minimum of two semesters. Six months before the final defense, the candidate must present a dissertation prospectus to the thesis research committee. Before graduation, the candidate must complete a dissertation based on original research and present a formal seminar on the research.
