The Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program (CIPP), administered by the UW-Madison Department of Medicine, offers a graduate certificate in clinical investigation. CIPP's mission is to develop independent investigators who are capable of leading successful clinical research programs. CIPP courses and requirements prepare and guide trainees in the responsible conduct of research, and meet this requirement for many training grants. To meet its mission, CIPP provides two to three years of course work linked to research and mentoring which is designed to give students in the health sciences the knowledge and skills to:
* Select and apply appropriate study design and statistics to research problems.
* Conduct clinical research according to professional and legal ethics.
* Lead and manage a productive career in clinical research.
* Teach and communicate scientific knowledge through verbal presentations.
* Write well-organized and logical journal publications, research proposals, and grant applications.
* Develop expertise in a research domain.
Students who wish to earn the graduate certificate in clinical investigation must be enrolled simultaneously in a UW-Madison graduate degree program. A capstone certificate is also offered for students not currently enrolled in a UW-Madison graduate degree program. Capstone certificate applicants are admitted as Special students through the Division of Continuing Studies; see www.dcs.wisc.edu/capstone.

The CIPP curriculum is supported by a variety of departments, centers, offices, and faculty that support clinical research. The Department of Population Health Sciences provides existing courses in epidemiology and leadership. The Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics offers courses in study design and statistical methods focused in clinical research. Ethics courses are conducted by faculty who reside in the Department of Medical History and Bioethics. Writing, leadership, teaching skills, and special topics in human-subjects research are provided through existing faculty-development programs offered through the General Clinical Research Center, and the Human Subjects Office. The Graduate School provides many seminars and workshops to assist in teaching the responsible conduct of clinical research courses. Seminars and workshops available at UW-Madison to meet the program's goals and objectives follow.
