Examinations Yes Time Constraints Yes Candidates in the literary studies area who achieve a grade of "Pass 1" on the comprehensive examination proceed to the Ph.D. Candidates who earn a grade of "Pass 2" may take the examination a second time. A grade of Terminal Pass on the comprehensive examination bars a student from proceeding to the Ph.D.; students awarded a Terminal Pass may be eligible for an M.A. degree. This examination must be successfully passed within five years of completing the final required course. |

Minor Requirements Ph.D. students in all English programs must complete a minor. Ph.D. candidates from other departments who wish to pursue a minor in English must secure advance approval of their proposed course of study from the director of graduate studies in English.
