Specific Courses Yes Candidates in the literary studies area must complete four courses in different periods of English/American/Anglophone literatures; one in critical methods; one in language or linguistics; and one elective course. For candidates in the linguistics area, English 324 and 330 are prerequisites. English 325, 329, and 333 are required courses. Examinations Yes Time Constraints Yes Candidates in the literary studies area who achieve a grade of "Pass 1" on the comprehensive examination proceed to the Ph.D. Candidates who earn a grade of "Pass 2" may take the examination a second time. A grade of Terminal Pass on the comprehensive examination bars a student from proceeding to the Ph.D.; students awarded a Terminal Pass may be eligible for an M.A. degree. This examination must be successfully passed within five years of completing the final required course. Candidates in the applied English linguistics area must apply for permission to pursue the Ph.D. degree in English language and linguistics. Language Requirements Yes Demonstration of adequate competence in one foreign language is required before taking the comprehensive examination. Candidates in the applied English linguistics area who are non-native speakers of English may offer English as the language that satisfies this reading competence requirement.	Language Requirements No	Language Requirements Yes Literary studies: Demonstration of advanced competence in one language and adequate competence in another is required; the advanced language is usually directly pertinent to the student's dissertation research. At least adequate competence must be demonstrated before the student may take the preliminary examination. Composition and rhetoric: Demonstration of adequate competence in one language and advanced competence in a research tool (which may be a second language) is required. All tool requirements must be completed by the end of the sixth semester.
		Minor Requirements Ph.D. students in all English programs must complete a minor. An external minor consists of course work in a field or department other than English. These minors are the responsibility of the minor department/program. Students may also pursue an internal minor. Students in any of the three programs may also minor in either of the remaining two. For example, literary studies students may minor in composition and rhetoric or linguistics, and so on. A distributed minor consists of 10-12 credits chosen according to a cogent rationale from courses in different departments outside English. Plans for a distributed minor must be approved by the director of graduate studies. Ph.D. candidates from other departments who wish to pursue a minor in English must secure advance approval of their proposed course of study from the director of graduate studies in English. A minor in English consists of 10-12 credits of graduate work with no grade lower than B.
