  • Chinese program: History of Chinese Literature, History of Chinese Language, History of Chinese Thought, Proseminar in Chinese Literature, Seminar in Chinese literature or Chinese linguistics or Chinese thought.

  • Candidates in the Chinese program are required to take four seminars beyond the M.A. level. With the consent of the major professor, courses above the 700 level (exclusive of reading courses) that require a substantive research paper may be substituted for one or two of the seminars.
  • Japanese literature students must take: 653 and 654; one course in research methods and source materials; Japanese Literature 763; and Seminar 953.

  • Candidates in the Chinese program must complete a minimum of 24 credits, including 6 credits of electives in the department and 3 credits of electives outside the department.

    A final examination is required for both Chinese and Japanese degree candidates. Candidates in the Chinese program are required to demonstrate competence in modern and classical Chinese by passing a translation examination as part of the master's examination.

    Candidates for the degree in Chinese are required to submit two substantial research papers written in seminars, or, with the consent of the committee, in some other course above the 700 level.

  • Candidates in the Chinese program must attain competence in modern and classical Chinese and demonstrate reading proficiency in one language related to their research (usually Japanese, French, or German).
  • Japanese literature students must demonstrate reading proficiency in classical Chinese and one Western language.
  • Japanese linguistic students are required to demonstrate basic knowledge of the structure of one non-Western language. Contact the department for more information.
