  • 24 credits are divided into two groups. The professional group: 12 credits of chemical engineering courses; at least 6 of these 12 must be in courses numbered 700 to 899. The elective group: 12 credits; at least 6 of these must be in departments outside chemical engineering. Up to six credits for ChE 300-499 are allowed in the two groups combined.
  • For master's candidates presenting a thesis, not fewer than 5 nor more than 8 credits of research may be counted toward the 24-credit requirement. For the project report option, a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 research credits may be counted toward the total.

  • Six courses totaling at least 18 credits in the chemical and biological engineering department. These credits must be in courses numbered 500 to 899, excluding independent study and research courses. Four of the courses must be selected from the following set of core graduate courses: CBE 620 Intermediate Transport Phenomena, CBE 660 Intermediate Problems in Chemical Engineering, CBE 710 Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, CBE 735 Kinetics and Catalysis, CBE 562 Biological Engineering: Molecules, Cells and Systems.

    Candidates must successfully complete an oral examination before a department examining committee. The candidate may defend a master's thesis or an independent study project report.

    The preliminary examination written report must be completed by February 15 of the second year of residence in the graduate program, and the oral portion by the end of the same semester. To qualify for the Ph.D. program, a student's GPA in four core courses and grade on the preliminary examination must meet a minimum standard.
