The Food Research Institute Food Research Institute
at the  University of Wisconsin–Madison

The Food Research Institute, in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, is both a research institute and holds standing as an academic department, the Department of Food Microbiology and Toxicology. It occupies its own building, operates its own laboratories, and administers its own research and service programs.
Mission

  • The mission of FRI is to generate, integrate, and disseminate food safety information through research, education, and outreach that address foodborne microbial pathogens and their toxins, food toxicants, and intervention strategies required to maintain and improve food safety.
  • To fulfill this mission FRI engages in the following food safety activities:
    ·    Conducts fundamental and applied research
    ·    Provides accurate and useful information and expertise
    ·    Delivers quality education and training
    ·    Provides leadership in identifying and resolving food safety issues to meet community, government, and industry needs

Operational Concept

  • Our microbiological sections conduct basic and applied research in food-associated illnesses caused by bacteria, molds, and viruses. Other sections deal with diet and behavior, food allergy, and diet and cancer. We offer expert technical advice to government, industry, and various supporting agencies. We undertake no confidential or secret projects for either government or industry. All significant findings are published in refereed journals.

Communication

  • FRI Focus on Food Safety Series meetings concentrate on single food safety topics that bring those persons interested in specific food safety topics together. These interactions allow for public debate and development of relationships among scientists. Each meeting features research conducted by FRI faculty and staff, collaborations with other UW Madison departments as well as balancing the program with outside experts from other universities, regulatory agencies, and pertinent industry researchers. Our goal is to design programs that will help you do your jobs better and keep our food supply safer.
  • FRI Newsletter provides up-to-date information on our research projects, appearing quarterly, also available on the FRI web site.
  • FRI Briefings give in-depth coverage of emerging and current food safety concerns, also available on the FRI web site.
  • We send mailings as special problems develop.
