English Major: Honors Program Requirements- Fall 2005 and later


Students wishing to earn honors in the major field should consult the advisor regarding the application procedure and requirements. The honors curriculum consists of a minimum of 31 credits and also includes a requirement that at least one course, in addition to the designated honors courses, must be taken for honors credit. It is recommended that students begin the curriculum in the first semester of their sophmore year, if possible.


Students must take one course in the 4 credit format (selected from 215,216, or 217). The fourth credit is a writing-intensive workshop focusing on drafts and the revision of papers required by the course.

 

215: British Literature before 1750

   

216: British and Anglophone Literature from 1750 to the Present

   

217: American Literature

   

A course in Shakespeare (219, 220, 226, 417, 418)

   

One pre-1800 course (excluding Shakespeare) This includes pre-1800 American literature.

   

One additional English elective at the intermediate or advanced level

   

381 Sophmore Honors: Research Methods in English

   

481 Junior Honors: Seminar in the Major

   

681 & 682: Senior Honors Thesis
