From the Director of Graduate Studies

Welcome! The Graduate Division of the English Department encompasses seven distinct, highly selective fields of study, crisscrossed and linked by collaborative paths, bridge programs, and interdisciplinary avenues. We offer degrees in Literary Studies (PhD only), and in Literary Studies with a Creative Writing Minor; Doctoral Programs in Composition and Rhetoric and in English Language and Linguistics; a Master of Arts degree in Applied English Linguistics; a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing; and a Certificate Program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Spotlight: Bridge Programs in Graduate English

Students in the Afro-American Studies Bridge Program receive an MA degree in Afro-American Studies, concentrating in literature, and join the Deptartment of English for a PhD (Literary Studies). Composition and Rhetoric Bridge Program students receive an MA in either Literary Studies or Afro-American Studies, then join the Dept. of English for a PhD (Composition and Rhetoric).
