What is a tutorial session?
A tutorial is the 30 minute meeting between the English 100 student who requests supplementary assistance outside of their section and one of the Program Co-Directors.
The tutorial is designed to provide additional one-on-one contact with an experienced writing instructor for a wide range of student writing concerns and abilities.
Tutorials may address any number of classroom-related topics: understanding course readings, short writing assignments, brainstorming paper topics, editing and revising rough drafts, etc.
Just as the scheduling of a tutorial session is student-initiated, the meetings themselves are focused according to the needs of the individual student and require his or her active participation.
Tutorials are exclusively available to students currently enrolled in English 100 and are available by appointment only.
Although the Tutorial Program’s structure (with one-on-one instruction and short non-credit classes) is similar to that of the Writing Center and tutorials sometimes take place there, it is an entirely separate entity.
Because English 100 students cannot receive one-on-one help with their English 100 papers through the Writing Center, the Tutorial Program exists as the English 100 student’s resource for one-on-one tutorials.
It’s important to note, however, that English 100 students may attend the Writing Center’s short classes and make individual appointments to discuss their writing for other classes, just not for English 100.
