Charles Chavunduka completed his Ph.D Program in December 2006. Since April 2007, Charles has been working as technical adviser to the USAID Sudan Customary Land Tenure Program: Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States. The objective of the Program is to strengthen the land tenure security of customary land users and thereby contribute to peace building under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that was entered between the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 2005.

Charles works with communities to record their customary land ownership boundaries, as a step towards giving their lands the same protection as privately held lands elsewhere in Sudan. Concurrently, he works with the government to develop land policies and laws that give recognition to customary land rights.

The USAID Sudan Customary Land Tenure Program: Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States has increased communities' awareness about opportunities provided in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for the legal recognition of customary land rights. As one of the immediate Program impacts, the recording of customary land ownership boundaries has been helping communities in resolving some of their long standing boundary disputes.
