Field of Study

The undergraduate major in Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) provides a basic theoretical and technical study of the structure, molecular biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, and laboratory identification of the various microorganisms that cause human disease, as well as the host immune response to them.

Possible Careers

Current employment opportunities are good for MMI graduates, there are a variety of career options from which to choose - research microbiologist in biotechnology, government, industrial, and university laboratories; area representative for a pharmaceutical company; and positions in health-related industries. Other options are to combine this degree with business, law or education, or complete a year of physics and a course in calculus to prepare for graduate and professional school.

  • Prospective majors should consult a departmental advisor during the freshman year – before taking Introductory Biology courses - to outline a course of study appropriate to the student’s needs, professional goals and specialized interests.
