Summer Science Institute
SSI Home - Program Information
The Summer Science Institute (SSI) is a seven-week residential experience in which students gain an understanding of biological/physical research while learning about college life. Students also participate in classes, which will strengthen their writing and math skills. More than 500 students have benefited from this program since its inception in 1990.
Students are paired up and work with a Mentor on a specific research
project. The project entails in-depth, hands-on research that is conducted
by the triad. Each group is asked to create a poster displaying their
research project, which is then presented to the other groups in a "poster
session" format. Once the research has been completed, each group
writes up a research report and presents their project and findings
at our closing research symposium.
There is no cost to SSI participants. Room, board, books and materials are provided by the program. Students who successfully complete the program may apply for one-half elective credit through the Madison Metropolitan School District.
