Courses and academic programs with a research component

Opportunities for learning about research or for getting experience in a research laboratory can be found in introductory biology courses as well as many upper-level and independent study courses. Some of the courses open to freshmen or sophomores are listed below. See the Biology Course Information database for many more introductory and upper level courses with a research component.

  • Ways of Knowing Biology (spring semester) - This one-credit course introduces first-year students to the research process and the various research opportunities open to them on campus. The course features research seminars by leading campus researchers, discussions, research explorations and graduate student/post-doc shadowing. More information is available on the course website.

  • Zoology/Botany 151/152 - In the laboratory portion of 152 (the second semester of the 151/152 sequence), students may choose to do mentored research projects in laboratories and field sites on campus. The course coordinator assists students in finding mentors working in the area of the student's interest. Details of this offering are announced in Zoology/Botany 151 and are outlined in the 151 laboratory manual.

  • Introduction to Undergraduate Research 288 (fall semester) - Sophomores or juniors in the Honors Program in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) who want to get started on a research project may sign-up for this fall course. For more information on this course and on applying to the CALS Honors Program, contact asa.cals@ccmail.adp.wisc.edu or visit the Office of Academic Student Affairs, Rm 116 Agriculture Hall.

  • Biocore 302: Evolution, Ecology and Genetics Laboratory (fall semester) - Students accepted into the Biocore program learn ecological concepts by participating in an ongoing, multi-year Prairie Restoration Research Project. For information on admission to the Biocore Program, contact the Biocore Office at clborche@facstaff.wisc.edu or (608/262-5976).

  • Directed or Independent Study, Special Problems, Honors and Senior Thesis courses - These courses can be found in the Timetable and Undergraduate Catalog under numbers such as 199, 299, 681-2, 691-2, 698 and 699. The directed/independent study courses can be done during any semester and may be repeated for credit. Many students find the that Summer Session is a good time for working on research.
