Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program (IBS-SRP)

 PLANT DEVELOPMENT, BREEDING AND GENETICS

As a subgroup of the University of Wisconsin's IBS-SRP we offer exceptional undergraduate students an opportunity to pursue basic and applied research experience at a world class research institution in laboratories focused on plant research. Students participating in this program will encounter a variety of research projects using various basic biological research techniques as well as specialized procedures associated with individual research programs such as:

  • Nucleic acid isolation and purification
  • DNA extraction, amplification, cloning and sequencing
  • PCR reactions
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Southern, Western blots
  • Gene expression analysis
  • Applied field design
  • Crop fertilization and reproduction

Over one quarter of our past summer researchers are enrolled in plant science graduate programs at universities in Puerto Rico, Mississippi, and the University of Wisconsin. Comments from past participants indicate that they enjoyed this program and learned a great deal.

Research opportunities and participating labs change every year. However, opportunities are diverse as seen from examples of past researchers and their projects. A comprehensive list of plant researchers at the UW-Madison can be found at the Portal to Plant Biology and Plant Sciences at the UW-Madison website.

If you are interested in a specific research opportunity, contact the PI directly via email or contact one of the following subgroup coordinators with any specific questions that you may have: Bill Kojis or Sara Patterson
