Workshop on Case-based Learning in the Biological Sciences: Multiple Ways to Use Cases

Friday, October 26, 2007
1360 Genetics/Biotechnology Center, 425 Henry Mall

The Center for Biology Education will host a 1 day workshop for UW-System Biology faculty/instructional staff, led by Margaret Waterman and Ethel Stanley, two experienced workshop leaders with extensive expertise in investigative case-based learning; see http://www.bioquest.org/icbl/ and their book, Waterman, M. and Stanley, E. 2004, Biological Inquiry: A Workbook of Investigative Case Studies. Benjamin Cummings ISBN: 0805371761. A team of organizers from four UW-System campuses will plan the event with the workshop leaders.

This workshop will be designed to help those just starting in case-based learning as well as those with experience. Topics will include ways to implement cases effectively in lecture, discussion, and lab. Case-based learning was chosen at the 2004 "Scholarly Inquiry of Teaching and Learning Practice in the Biological Sciences" gathering of UW-System Biologists as one of two areas of common interest for collaboration. This event will promote collaboration and sharing among biologists at the UW-System.

To promote sharing and networking across the UW-System, we are creating a UW-System Biology Cases Portal (links to short descriptions of cases and their implementation stories) using the KEEP toolkit. If you are an instructor in the UW-System and have written or adapted cases (whether you can come to the workshop or not), please see the instructions below. We would like completed info by the workshop so that we can show them!

The workshop will be free for 40 UW-System faculty/instructional staff, thanks to funding from the Center for Biology Education, UW-Madison, and the Office for Professional and Instructional Development of the UW-System (OPID). Lunch and parking permits are included. Campuses must cover transportation costs for travel to Madison- please inform your department if you wish to attend.

Register by completing the registration form and returning it by October 5 to cbe@mailplus.wisc.edu as an attachment.
