For students

Are you a first semester student at UW-Madison Interested in a biological sciences major? Placed into Math 221? Approved for Chem 109? Register for a BioFIG cluster!

What are BIGs?

BioFIGS (Biology Interest Groups) offer a seminar-style biology course for your first semester, designed around interesting topics to integrate biology, math, and chemistry. The seminar course is small, dynamic, and supportive -- planned by a team of faculty from all three courses -- to help you prepare for a successful future in the biological sciences. One BioFIG will be offered in 2005, linking Math 221, Chem 109, and a BIG seminar.

Why Join a BIG? Students Say:
  • "Meet other freshmen with similar interests; make lasting friendships"
  • "A chance to really learn about current biological issues in a class forum"
  • "Get to know faculty in your first semester"
  • "Create close-knit study groups!"

2005 Course Information

To Register: see the FIG Coordinator at SOAR and ask for BioFIGs.

Ecological and Environmental Issues, 13 Credits

Professor Tony Ives
Learn how ecology affects your lives through such things as emerging diseases, health risks of genetically engineered crops, and environmental effects of invading species. See how math and chemistry can help you address biological issues. Start your classes in biology in your first year with Prof. Tony Ives, Zoology. If you are interested in any of the biological sciences, you will find yourself intrigued by the issues studied in the FIG.
