Applying to the Graduate Program

The Department of Art History at the University of Wisonsin-Madison offers courses of study leading to the MA and PhD degrees in art history. Applications are accepted for admission in the Fall semester. The application deadline is December 30.

The following application materials are required:

By the Department:

  • 2 copies of ALL original transcripts
  • GRE scores (and TOEFL if international)
  • writing sample (any length you choose, but not more than 20 pages)
  • CV
  • statement of reason/purpose

  • online application
  • $45 non refundable application fee. Payable by
    credit card (mastercard or visa), debit/atm card, personal check or money order, drawn on a U.S. bank. Please do not send cash.

    Please do not send transcripts, reasons for graduate study, letters of recommendations or any other departmental documentation to the Graduate School. These materials will not be forwarded to your department/program.

    International applicants: Please do not send financial documents until requested by the Graduate School. This information will be requested upon a positive admission recommendation from the department/program.
