History 375
|
|
An introduction to the history, aesthetics, techniques, and social contexts of painting and woodblock prints in early modern Japan (from 1600 to 1900). The number of objects studied will be limited in favor of careful attention to major examples and the issues they raise. To the degree that class size permits, discussion will be strongly encouraged. No prior knowledge is assumed. Students will have abundant opportunity to study first hand actual works in the Elvehjem Museum on campus. |
