Arts of Japan

This course is an introduction to the history and aesthetics of Japanese art. It addresses major developments in painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, prints, and other selected crafts and gives close attention to the historical contexts in which the works of art were made. Examples of such contexts are the social and aesthetic environments of the ancient imperial court, early medieval Zen monasteries, medieval warrior residences, tea ceremony circles, and early modern cities.
