This will be an introductory course covering the history of Indian art from
the Indus Valley Period to Rajput painting.
Throughout the course, the students will be encouraged to carefully observe
the iconographic and stylistic development of the Indian art and architecture.
A perspective on the cultural continuity and change of Indian society will be
maintained as a basis for considering this development. They will also learn
how to recognize and understand the continuity of artistic motifs throughout
the history. Toward the end of the course, students will be quite familiar with
various stylistic features of the artistic works and should feel confident enough
to identify the arts of India in terms of province, iconography, style and period.
