Art History 346
British Art and Society from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

This course will survey the visual culture of Britain both chronologically and thematically from Hogarth to contemporary artists. We will focus on various issues and images of "Britishness" in a period during which this concept was just emerging, considering racial, class, and gender identities. Artists and movements include the Pre-Raphaelites, Arthurianism, Frederick Leighton and the Neo-Classicists, Whistler and Aestheticism, the Bloomsbury Group, Art and the World Wars, and the recent sensation-seeking Young British Artists.

Requirements will include a midterm, a final, and writing assignments.
