This course will survey the visual culture of Britain both chronologically and thematically from Hogarth to contemporary artists. We will focus on various issues and images of "Britishness" in a period during which this concept was just emerging, considering racial, class, and gender identities. Artists and movements include the Pre-Raphaelites, Arthurianism, Frederick Leighton and the Neo-Classicists, Whistler and Aestheticism, the Bloomsbury Group, Art and the World Wars, and the recent sensation-seeking Young British Artists. Requirements will include a midterm, a final, and writing assignments. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor |
