Western Architecture: Renaissance to Modern

This is a survey of the main trends of the architecture of Europe from about 1420 to about 1930, placing emphasis on the relationship of style, culture, and the history of ideas. There are three examinations, each worth 30% of the course. The remaining 10% is determined by the TA on section assignments and participation in discussion. 5. Late Elizabethan, Baroque, Palladianism and the Neoclassic in England
6. Rococo and Neoclassic in France
7. Napoleonic Neoclassicism, Romantic Rationalism, and the Second Empire in France
8. The Gothick, the Picturesque, and the Gothic Revival in England
9. High Victorian Gothic, the Queen Anne, and the English Free Style in England
10. Nineteenth-Century Metallic Construction
11. Europe at the Turn of the Century: Art Nouveau, Catalan Modernisme, Glasgow School, and the Vienna Secession
12. The Deutscher Werkbund, Expressionism, Futurism, De Stijl, and the International Style
