The mission of the Department of Art History is to promote scholarly inquiry into the history of art, in all its different media, in a wide range of historical periods and world cultures.

Announcements

Under the leadership of Professor Jill Casid, the recently formalized Visual Culture Center presents a 2008-09 series of public conferences entitled "Parallax: Changing Perspectives in Visual Culture." Click the link above for a full schedule of events, and check the upcoming Art History week announcements as the events approach. The Art History Department is proud to co-sponsor the entire series.

Evjue-Bascom Professor Henry Drewal has organized a series of public programs to accompany his traveling exhibition entitled "Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and Its Diasporas" that will open at the Chazen Museum of Art on October 17-18, 2008 and close January 10, 2009.

These programs include a boat regatta on Lake Mendota, a lectures series by artists and scholars, dance, music, and spoken word performances, and a film series. All are free and open to the public, supported by the Chazen Museum of Art and a grant from the Anonymous Fund to the Department of Art History.
