Biographical Sketch
Rand Valentine is a linguist who specializes in the Algonquian language, Ojibwe, and to a lesser extent, its sister language, Cree. His main research focus is language documentation, and he is the editor of a collection of Ojibwe texts and the author of a comprehensive grammar of the eastern dialect complex of Ojibwe. He is presently working on a dictionary of this same dialect complex, in collaboration with Mary Ann Corbiere of the University of Sudbury, in Sudbury, Ontario.
Rand's documentary methodology stresses the production of materials that will be of value to Ojibwe language teachers and learners. He has worked for many years at the Native Language Instructors' Program (NLIP), a summer program taught at Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which certifies Ojibwe and Cree language teachers to teach in the province of Ontario. NLIP also develops language-teaching resources.
Rand has also developed many computer applications to aid language learners. He works with several communities in Wisconsin that are striving to keep the Ojibwe language alive, as well.
