Snow Removal Service for Individuals with Mobility Impairments

Snow Removal Service Available

As a service to individuals with mobility impairments on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, Physical Plant employees will work, as requested, to clear accessible pedestrian routes for individuals with mobility impairments on snowy and icy days.  Services provided include shoveling snow from—and spreading salt or sand on—sidewalks in order to mitigate icy conditions.  This service applies to accessible pedestrian routes on the UW-Madison campus only.  Pedestrian routes belonging to the City of Madison are not covered under this service.  No transportation or personal assistance will be provided.  This snow removal service is available to UW students and employees as well as visitors to the University of Wisconsin campus.

Individuals with mobility impairments may call Physical Plant Central Answering and Response (CARS) and request that a pedestrian route be cleared of snow and ice in order to facilitate movement from one building to another.  This service is available from 7:45 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  CARS will handle these calls on a first-come, first-served basis.  As a result, there may be a delay in responding to calls during peak travel hours.  This service is not available on weekends or holidays.  Furthermore, this service may not be available during winter storm or blizzard conditions when all crews are clearing critical roadways.

Requesting Services

Individuals requesting service must call Physical Plant CARS at 263-3333 and provide the following information:  building name and location of the entrance where travel will begin, and building name and location of the entrance where travel will end.  The person making the request must meet the Physical Plant employee at the point where travel begins.

Paratransit

Individuals with mobility impairments are encouraged to use Madison Metro Paratransit to get around campus during winter months (see Resources below).  Individuals are also encouraged to schedule sufficient time between classes or duties to use Paratransit.  Metro Paratransit offers door-to-door service when requested.  Metro Paratransit requires that an application be submitted in order to become a registered rider eligible for Paratransit service.  Processing an application can take a few weeks so it is best to apply before winter weather arrives.  Paratransit service is free to eligible UW-Madison students and employees.
