Eligibility Requirements

The UW-Madison McNair Scholars Program is made up of 25 high achieving undergraduates.   You must submit an application in order to gain admission to the program.  Because there are a limited number of spots available this is a competitive process and no one is guaranteed entrance.  However, we encourage ALL interested and eligible students to apply.  Please do not pass up this incredible opportunity! The eligiblility requirements are listed below:

1.) You are a low-income student who is also a first-generation college student as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.

OR,

2.) You are a member of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education (African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaskan Natives); 

AND,

3.) Have completed 54 credits by the time you enter into the program; 
Have a 3.0 minimum cumulative Grade Point Average;  and
Interested in pursuing a graduate degree*.  

4.) Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. 

Clarification:  In order to be eligible, you must meet either criteria #1 OR criteria #2 (you do not need to meet both criteria to be eligible) (Asian-American students are eligible if you meet criteria 1).  ALL students must meet criteria #3 & #4 to be eligible.  Please call us at (608) 262-0631 or email us at mcnair@bascom.wisc.edu if you have any questions about your eligibility.

*Students whose career goals include the medical (M.D.) or professional fields (J.D., D.V.M.) are not eligible for the McNair Scholars Program, unless it is a joint Ph. D/Masters program.
